Feature Story Draft

Below is a rough draft of my unfinished feature story:

Being uprooted and constantly moving in the stage of adolescence can seriously harm the development of someone’s mental health and sociability. The term “army brat”, is a widely known phrase and it is used to describe the children of military families. These children are often subjected to not being able to settle down or feel secure in having a true “home”. It is often that military children are displeased with their situation and they hoped that they could stay in one place, but that is not the case for 17 year-old Jada Lewis who has lived in 7 places in total.

When moving around at a young age, each place can be totally different, but one factor constantly remains the same. School. There is usually a concern for children at a young age when it comes to them trading schools, but that concern tends to grow much larger when each school is across state lines. Lewis, a senior in high school, gave some insight on what it's like to constantly be the “new kid” at school. “Uhh I loved the mystery of it! It was always interesting for people to ask ‘where are you from?’ Listing everywhere I’ve moved is always an interesting conversation.” In these situations Lewis has used her never-ending cycle of moving from place to place to her advantage. Talking about her colorful life sparked numerous discussions thus leaving her with new friends and an audience to share her life story with. Lewis then went on to say how she deals with all the attention. “I’m a Leo, so I loved the attention of being a new kid!” This “new kid” situation works out perfectly for Lewis because she likes the attention and sharing her story with others attracts new friends.

When moving to a new place seems like all that you do you might develop a taste or yearn for it. Lewis’ family had finally settled down in Atlanta Georgia and she says, “it feels strange now knowing my family is done moving.” Lewis has gotten accustomed to the nomadic like lifestyle. “I was 5 months old when we moved from South Carolina to New Orleans.”  Lewis has been moving around from a very young age, she has moved to 7 new places in 17 years. Statistically speaking there is no way that Lewis could have lived in more than two years in each place she resided in.
